KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ John Mayberry, a Kansas City Royals star in the 1970s, was accused of trying to swallow a plastic bag when police tried to arrest him.

The 50-year-old former player was charged with resisting arrest after scuffling with officers. He was released after posting bond Wednesday night.

Mayberry was stopped about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday and police discovered he was wanted for a traffic violation. When they tried to arrest him, he shoved a plastic bag into his mouth and ran off, the officers said.

The officers tackled him and he swallowed the plastic bag, police said. He was taken to a hospital to be examined.

Mayberry, a power-hitting first baseman, spent 15 seasons in the majors, playing with Houston, Kansas City and Toronto. In his six seasons with the Royals, he averaged 24 home runs and 94 RBIs. He retired in 1982.
