North Carolina man killed after being hit twice in road
GOLDSBORO, N.C. (AP) — The North Carolina Highway Patrol says a man was killed when he was hit by two cars while he was bent over in the road.
The patrol told news outlets 63-year-old Joel Jerome Smith of Goldsboro was bent over with his back to traffic when a car struck him Saturday evening. According to the patrol, a second car hit Smith almost immediately. It’s not known why Smith was bent over in the middle of the road.
Patrol First Sgt. John Bobbitt said neither driver will face charges. Bobbitt said the drivers told him Smith was wearing dark clothing and they didn’t see him in the road because it was dark.
WRAL-TV in Raleigh reports Smith was part of his church’s outreach group and was going door-to-door to talk to people.
