Titans pressure defense leads them past Lewiston

December 6, 2018

LEWISTON -- Lewiston didn’t have an answer for Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer’s full court pressure defense Tuesday night.

The Titans defeated the Tigers 62-49 at Lewiston Consolidated High School.

Lewiston jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the first quarter, but HTRS’ pressure defense started to create easy baskets. They went on a 14-0 run to take a 19-8 lead.

Conner Bredemeier started the run with a jumper and Nic Knudson followed that up with a back court steal and layup. A basket by Gage Schaardt followed by two straight basket by Hunter Hain made it 15-8. Knudson and Caleb Tackett finished the run with back to back baskets.

The two teams traded a free throw to end the first quarter, making the score 20-9.

Lewiston’s Ryan Hunt opened the second quarter with a basket, but a three point play by Hain made it 23-11.

With the score 29-17 later in the quarter, HTRS would rattle of nine straight points to lead 38-17. They led 42-21 at half time.

Lewiston tried to make a run in the second half, but the 21 point deficit was too much to overcome and HTRS would hold on to win 62-49.

“We never recovered from the first half,” said first year Lewiston coach Jared Knapp. “We cut into the deficit, but the 21 point deficit was too much. HTRS’ full court press forced us to turn the ball over and they were able to convert easy baskets.”

Schaardt and Hain had 14 points each for HTRS while Knudson had 11, Bredemeier had nine, Isiah Lockard had eight and Caleb Tackett had six.

Lewiston was led by Treyton Hippen’s 15 points while Levi Meyrbunn had 10, Hunt had nine, Daniel Gonzalez had six, Hayden Christen had five and Jonathan Janssen had four.

HTRS improves to 1-1 on the season and they will travel to Lourdes Central Catholic on Friday. Lewiston falls to 1-1 and they will host College View Academy on Thursday.
