HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) _ Seventeen people were believed to be stranded on an ice floe in Lake St. Clair on Tuesday evening, a firefighter said.

Harrison Township firefighter Andy Houde said the Macomb County department had started a rescue for the people on an ice floe about a half-mile from shore. The ice broke off near Metro Beach, which is about 25 miles north of Detroit.

The floe apparently broke off and stranded the people. Houde said there were no reports of people in the water. Two boats were being used to try and rescue them and a Coast Guard helicopter was en route.

Petty Officer David Sapp said he believes the 17 people were ice fishermen. The Coast Guard received the report of the breakaway ice at 4:55 p.m.

``The ice is way too thin for people to be out on it,'' Sapp said.
