Peoria testing prescription drug disposal program
PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) — Authorities in Peoria County are testing a program to allow residents to safely dispose of old prescription drugs.
The idea is to limit the abuse of prescription medicines by getting people to dispose of them and reduce the chances the drugs will be stolen and misused. Organizers hope it will also lower the risk of accidental poisoning for those who were originally prescribed the drugs.
The (Peoria) Journal Star reports (http://bit.ly/16VSj3e ) that starting next week people can drop off old medicines at a special collection point outside the Peoria Heights Police Department from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The effort is being organized by the Peoria County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition.
The Journal Star says the program could be expanded if successful.
