June 3, 2019

NEW BERN, N.C. (AP) — A baseball team and restaurant owner in eastern North Carolina says he’d bring ingenuity, energy and grit to North Carolina politics if he’s elected lieutenant governor next year.

Buddy Bengel announced Monday he would seek the Republican nomination for the post. The New Bern native joins at least three other candidates already in the GOP field, including Renee Ellmers, a former congresswoman.

In an opening campaign video , Bengel highlighted his work developing the Morehead City Marlins summer-league team for college players and operating several restaurants, as well as helping with New Bern’s recovery following Hurricane Florence. Bengel also has been serving on the North Carolina Education Lottery Commission.

Current Lt. Gov Dan Forest is running for governor next year.
