HAZELWOOD, Mo. (AP) _ General Mills Inc. plans to close a plant in Hazelwood by next fall, a move that would affect more than 400 jobs. The plant supplies frozen bakery goods and fresh-baked items to supermarkets.

General Mills spokeswoman Marybeth Thorsgaard said Thursday it remained unclear when job cuts would begin.

She said the company's initial determination to close the plant is based on consolidating manufacturing within the company's supply chain.

Pillsbury bought the facility, known as Hazelwood Farms, from Supervalu Inc. in 1999.

General Mills also operates plants in Kansas City, Hannibal and Joplin, Mo.

In trading on the New York Stock Exchange, General Mills shares fell 1 cent to close Thursday at $42.30.
