Wink Martindale, Ravens DC, compares Baker Mayfield to Favre, Elway

October 4, 2018

Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale is the latest to give a lofty compliment to Baker Mayfield.

Citing “the kid’s confidence and swag,” Martindale told reporters in Baltimore that he sees the Cleveland Browns’ rookie quarterback as the next coming of some all-time greats.

“I already told the defense this, I think Baker Mayfield is this generation’s Brett Favre or John Elway, if you will,” Martindale said. “This guy knows where he wants to go with the ball, and he’s very accurate. He’s got a quick release, and he’s really playing well.”

The Ravens face the Browns Sunday. Mayfield, the No. 1 overall pick in 2018′s draft, lost his first NFL start last week against Oakland. But before that, he came on in relief to help the Browns beat the Jets for their first win since 2016.

Before Mayfield began taking regular-season snaps, he was already getting flattered by the likes of Drew Brees. Before Brees’ Saints played the Browns in Week 2, the future Hall of Famer said Mayfield “can be a lot better than me.”
