French club Bastia fires coach Claude Makelele
BASTIA, France (AP) — French club Bastia has fired coach Claude Makelele following a poor start to the season.
Makelele, who was part of the France team that lost the 2006 World Cup final to Italy, took over as coach this season after serving as an assistant coach at Paris Saint-Germain.
Bastia fired the former Real Madrid and Chelsea player on Monday after the team won only two league matches this season, leaving it second-to-last following a loss to Guingamp over the weekend.
Makelele is the first coach to be fired in the French first division this season. He has been replaced by the duo of Ghislain Printant and Herve Sekli on a temporary basis.
