Washington state boy, 4, accidentally shoots pregnant mother in face

SEATTLE, Washington — A 27-year-old pregnant woman suffered life-threatening injuries after her 4-year-old son accidentally shot her with a gun he had found hidden under a mattress, reports say.

The woman remained hospitalized Sunday but her condition was improving, the Associated Press reports.

The Kings County Sheriff’s Office tells the Seattle Times shooting occurred in an apartment at about 5 p.m. Saturday. The woman and her boyfriend, who is the boy’s father, were laying on the bed watching television when the boy found the gun underneath the mattress.

“(The gun) wasn’t secured like it should have been; it was just laying under the bed and it was loaded,” sheriff’s office Sgt. Ryan Abbott tells the Times.

According to The Spokesman-Review, the boy’s father tells police he had borrowed the gun for protection. The gun is not registered but investigators say it doesn’t appear it was stolen.

No charges have been filed but the incident remains under investigation.

“We’re reminding anybody with a gun, kids see them as toys,” Abbott tells the Spokesman-Review. “The biggest tragic lesson here is please lock-up your guns so they can’t be used accidentally for the wrong reason.”
