High winds claim a life; thousands without power around NY

April 5, 2018

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — High winds have claimed a life and left thousands of utility customers without power around upstate New York.

State police say an outbuilding collapsed on Wednesday afternoon in the Jefferson County town of Theresa, killing a man.

By Thursday morning, utility workers around the state were hustling to restore electricity to more than 80,000 customers amid downed trees and wires

Power outages were scattered statewide, with many clustered in western New York near Buffalo, east of Albany in the Mohawk Valley and north of Albany stretching into the Adirondacks.

Fewer than 50,000 customers were still without power late Thursday afternoon.
