NEW YORK (AP) _ Actress Sophia Loren, wearing a hardhat labeled ''Sophia,'' visited Ellis Island to help publicize a Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation fund- raising effort, the American Immigrant Wall of Honor.

Americans who pay at least $100 can have the names of their immigrant ancestors inscribed on a plaque on a wall. The names also will be stored in a computer, along with the person's nation of origin.

''Ellis Island is a milestone of American history,'' Miss Loren, a French citizen who was born in Italy, said during her visit Monday.

She was accompanied by Chrysler Corp. Chairman Lee Iacocca, who said the foundation needs $15 million to $20 million to complete renovation of the immigration station as a museum and conference center.
