NEW YORK (AP) _ A majority of Americans apparently have no appetite for impeachment, even if President Clinton committed perjury.

The latest Newsweek poll shows only 39 percent think impeachment would be appropriate if the president lied under oath about a sexual relationship with Monica Lewinsky. Another 35 percent say it would be enough if Clinton apologized and 19 percent say no action should be taken.

If the situation boils down to Clinton's word against Lewinsky's, 36 percent believe what the president has said about the matter, while 39 percent take the word of the former intern.

However, 59 percent say they do not believe the president's denials.
