CLASS L BOYS SWIMMING New Haven comes out on top
NEW HAVEN — A dip in the pool is always refreshing.
To be soaking wet at the Southern Connecticut State University Hutchinson Natatorium Monday night was just fine with New Canaan High School boys swim coach Kat Munson.
The chlorine water everywhere meant one thing.
New Canaan High School had captured the 2019 Class L Boys Swimming Championship team title.
“The guys swam phenomenally in last Saturday’s Class L swim trials. It put us in position for a great meet tonight,” Munson said. “It was fun. Our top guys tonight were so so special.”
New Canaan took first place in seven of the 12 events and compiled 776 points overall.
Darien (620) was runnerup followed by Cheshire (519.50), Xavier (423), Hall (312.5) and Amity Regional (290).
“Last year was a tough year for us,” said New Canaan senior Michael Kotlyar, who won the 100 breaststroke, the 50 free and swam legs on two victorious Rams relays. “I’m happy to win for me. But tonight was all about the points for the team. I did my best. We all did our best to help the team.”
The other group of heroes for New Canaan were divers James Regusa, Connor Cloud, George Moore and Jackson Camporin. They swept the top four spots in the Class L diving to give the Rams a singular boost toward the title.
“The divers gave us a huge momentum boost,” NC’s Kotlyar said. “That’s what makes this group special; talented swimmers and great divers.”
Darien gave a wonderful effort while taking the runner-up spot.
The Blue Wave were hurt by their 200-yard medley relay quartet getting disqualified at Saturday’s L trials. It cost the Blue Wave between 40 and 60 points early.
“New Canaan had all those diving points. That killed us,” Darien coach Liz Blau said. “The relay disqualification was the final straw. I’m so proud of the guys’ effort. They laid it all on the line and we earned the runner-up plaque.”
For New Canaan coach Munson, it was her first Class L title. The next challenge comes Thursday night when New Canaan faces Greenwich at the State Open at Yale.
“We talk about the Open. It’s nice to win the Class L title,” Munson said. “Now we get the challenge at the State Open.”
