Five Killed on Texas Interstate

July 22, 2003

SIERRA BLANCA, Texas (AP) _ Five people died Monday when an auto-hauler rear-ended two cars on a west Texas interstate, sandwiching them and pushing them into the back of another tractor-trailer rig, authorities said.

All those killed were in the two cars, as were three of the four people injured. The driver of the auto-hauler also was injured.

The accident happened in the eastbound lanes of I-10, about 100 miles east of El Paso.

Sgt. Juan Torrez of the Department of Public Safety said the auto-hauler driver was not paying attention when he hit the passenger cars, forcing them into another tractor-trailer rig.

The multi-fatality accident is the second in as many days on the busy interstate, which runs along the southern border of the United States from Jacksonville, Fla., to Santa Monica, Calif. Five people were killed Sunday in Louisiana when an 18-wheeler plowed into 10 vehicles.

Torrez identified those killed as Vera Branscum, 58; Shannon Grady; and infant Jaben Kasinger, all of Mountain View, Ark.; and Cecilia Carrasco, 28, and Jacob Carrasco, 7, both of Pecos.
