No. 2 Greenwich football tops Staples, improves to 10-0

Using another dominant defensive effort and an effective offensive display, Greenwich put the finishing touch on an undefeated regular season, downing Staples, 29-0, in a Thanksgiving Day matchup at Cardinal Stadium.

Greenwich, which entered the rivalry game ranked fifth in Class LL, will host a the quarterfinal-round game of the Class LL Tournament on Tuesday. The Cardinals moved up to No. 3 in Class LL with Thursday’s triumph and Staples, which needed to beat Greenwich to have a chance of qualifying for the postseason, concluded its season with a record of 7-3.

Senior quarterback Gavin Muir scored on a 1-yard run and senior linebacker Evan Weigold returned an interception 33 yards for a touchdown, giving the Cardinals a 13-0 halftime lead.

Tysen Comizio, a senior, ran for a pair of 3-yard touchdowns in the second half for Greenwich, which posted its third shutout of the season.
