Weeraphol Keeps Bantamweight Title
BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) _ Thailand’s Weeraphol Nakhonluang retained his WBC bantamweight title Tuesday, stopping a bloodied Oscar Arciniega of Mexico in the fifth round.
Weeraphol was in command from the second round and opened a cut above Arciniega’s left eye early in the fifth round.
Referee David Chung of South Korea sent the badly bleeding Mexican to the ring doctor 1 minute, 55 seconds into the round. He then declared Weeraphol the winner.
Weeraphol, who first won the title in December 1998 against Joichiro Tatsuyoshi of Japan, raised his record to 28-1. Arciniega dropped to 31-15-2.
The bout was held at Bangkok’s oldest public field, Sanam Luang, in tribute to Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej on his 73rd birthday. The field is adjacent to the king’s Grand Palace.
