Legion baseball: Watertown goes two-and-out at host regional tournament
Watertown’s Post 189 American Legion baseball team hovered around .500 all season and ended that way after finishing 0-2 at its host Class AAA regional on Saturday at Washington Park.
Despite scoring 13 runs over two games, Watertown (11-11) bowed out of the tournament after losing 10-9 to Hartford and 5-4 to Oconomowoc.
Pinch runner Allen Valle scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Oconomowoc a 5-4 victory over Watertown in an elimination game.
Coleton Schwartz led off the winning rally with a leadoff double to right. Valle advanced to third on a groundout before coming home on the wild pitch.
Blake Klemke took the loss in relief, allowing one earned run on two hits with one strikeout and no walks over 1 1/3 innings. Samuel Letts started for Watertown and gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks over six innings.
Karsen Rupnow earned the win in relief, allowing one unearned run on one hit with one strikeout and two walks over two innings. Mauricio Villegas started for Oconomowoc and allowed three earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and no walks over six innings.
Taylor Wolter had three of Watertown’s 10 hits including a double. Collin Nehls added two hits.
Nick Juhl put Watertown up 1-0 in the top of the second inning with an RBI single to right.
Ryan Hogquist hit a two-run single on a line drive to center in the fourth inning.
Alek Lapp drew a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Letts, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch to put Watertown up 4-3.
Oconomowoc forced extra innings in the bottom of the seventh when Cole Ninmann drew a leadoff walk and scored on Rupnow’s second double of the game.

Hartford scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead for good.
Klemke took the loss in relief, allowing two earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk over the final two innings.
Hartford put together the winning rally with a leadoff walk, a passed ball and two RBI singles.
Trevor Tietz started the game for Watertown and gave up eight runs (two earned) on nine hits with nine strikeouts and one walk over five innings.
The majority of the damage done against Tietz came during the top of the fourth, when Hartford parlayed a pair of swinging bunts and two errors into a six-run rally.
Watertown responded with five runs in the bottom of the fourth on four hits and an error to take a 9-8 lead.
Ben Rothweiler and Brett Faltersack each drove in three runs for Watertown while Jonathan Lehman drove in two. Nehls had the other RBI with a base hit to right during a five-run rally in the fourth.
Garrett Thomas earned the win in relief for Hartford with three scoreless innings of work. He gave up no hits, struck out two and walked two.
