Two Women Charged With Leaving 8 Children In Squalid Apartment
CHICAGO (AP) _ A woman and her daughter were charged with endangering their children after police found eight boys and girls in a filthy apartment with no heat and a locked refrigerator over the weekend.
Police found the children, ranging in age from 10 months to 15 years, after the 15-year-old boy led officers to the apartment Sunday evening, Lt. Richard Aguinaga said.
The children had apparently been alone since Friday afternoon, Aguinaga said. There was no edible food or electricity, the toilet didn’t work and piles of dirty clothes used for bedding filled the apartment, police said.
Phyllis Davis, 31, and her mother, Doris Davis, 47, were charged with four counts each of endangering the health of a child. All eight children were taken into state custody.
Jackie Milton, Doris Davis’ sister, denied that the children were left alone. She said she stopped by the apartment Saturday evening and took her sister to the grocery store.
