March 4, 2002

NEW YORK (AP) _ Stock prices opened mostly higher Monday on Wall Street.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was ahead 45 points, and gainers outnumbered losers by about 2-to-1 on the New York Stock Exchange.

The Nasdaq Composite Index was down one point and the Standard and Poor’s 500 stock index had added three points.

Friday’s gains on Wall Street appeared to be carrying over to Monday’s session.

Markets were uniformly higher in overseas trading. Tokyo’s Nikkei Stock Average advanced nearly six percent.

The Dow began Monday’s session from its highest level since late August after equities rallied on upbeat economic news Friday.

Analysts say the solid gains indicate Wall Street is beginning to think the economy is recovering at a faster clip than previously thought.

The economic calendar was clear Monday, but reports are due later this week on fourth-quarter worker productivity and February employment.

The software group will be watched closely after Oracle warned about earnings again late Friday. Oracle shares opened with a decline of 13 percent on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
