Nineteen Saved From West German Trawler Sinking Off Scotland

June 26, 1987

KIRKWALL, Orkney Islands (AP) _ All 19 people aboard a West German trawler were rescued and escaped injury as the vessel sank in calm seas off the north coast of Scotland, the Coast Guard reported.

A helicopter from the British aircraft carrier Ark Royal winched one man from the sea during the Thursday night rescue and the other 18, including a child, abandoned ship in a lifeboat.

A Coast Guard spokesman said authorities did not know what caused the 998- ton Hessen to sink in the Pentland Firth channel.

Pentland Coast Guard service, based at Kirkwall, capital of the Scottish Orkney Islands off the northeast coast of Scotland, said all 19 were taken to a hotel at John O’Groats on the mainland.
