Skylift Stops at Amusement Park
ALTOONA, Iowa (AP) _ An amusement park skylift came to an abrupt stop, stranding riders about 50 feet above the ground.
Rescue crews used fire ladders and a crane to bring the 50 passengers safely back to the ground Saturday night at Adventureland Park, about 10 miles northeast of Des Moines.
No one was injured.
The ride stopped at about 7:40 p.m. Most of the passengers were freed within two hours.
Nine people were trapped in four baskets until after midnight. Rescue efforts were hampered because those riders were in baskets suspended over a log flume ride and the distance was too great for the ladders, Altoona Fire Chief Jerry Whetstone said. The crane was used to rescue them.
Park spokesman Brian Sullivan said the ride shut down because of a flipped breaker switch, but didn’t know why that happened.
