Devs’ 3rd-period run not enough: No. 4-ranked Wickenburg pulls away from pesky River Valley squad 51-40
MOHAVE VALLEY — The Dust Devils trailed by double-digits at halftime before turning the tide in the third quarter, but the Wranglers regained control to win 51-40 at River Valley High School during the Arizona Interscholastic Association 3A West Region boys basketball game on Wednesday evening.
Wickenburg High School’s Wade Peterson scored 15 points in the first half — all on 3-pointers — to help put the Wranglers ahead 32-16 late in the second period.
Peterson went on to lead all scorers with 20 points.
The Wranglers led 16-13 after one period and 33-19 at halftime.
River Valley head coach Dan Powell said he was proud of his Dust Devils’ third-quarter comeback against the 3A conference’s No. 4-ranked team, according to the aiaonline.org’s power-point system.
“We scored 18, they scored five,” Powell said. “We tied the score at 38.”
The Wranglers led 38-36 after three quarters.
“The kids played hard; they were the best team and they just played very hard,” Powell said. “I was disappointed that we lost.
“We’ll get them back in a week and a half.”
Trevor Walker scored seven points and Brenan Gleadeau added five during the Dust Devils’ third-quarter run, which featured excellent passing and perimeter shooting.
The Dust Devils ran out of gas in the final quarter, as the Wranglers outscored them 13-4 to win easily.
Peterson tallied five points and Austin Sarver added four during Wickenburg’s decisive fourth-quarter run.
Mike Mindnich also scored 14 points for the 11-0 overall, 2-0 in region Wranglers, according to MaxPreps. Walker scored 15 points, Nate Vargas tallied 10 and Andrew Rodriguez added eight for the 3-8 overall, 0-2 in region Dust Devils.
