City hosting event for public to learn about its 2019 budget
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — People in a Georgia city will have a chance to learn how officials plan the budget and talk with them about how their tax dollars should be spent next year.
The Savannah Morning News reported Monday that Savannah is partnering with Open Savannah for an Oct. 20 event to give residents an opportunity to share input before the City Council begins its 2019 budget deliberations.
City Management and Budget office Director Melissa Carter says residents will also be told what officials do to craft the budget.
Open Savannah is a Code for America affiliate that uses data, design and technology for civic engagement. The organization’s founder Carl Lewis says a smartphone app has been planned to launch that will simulate the budget and allow users to determine their spending priorities.
