NORMAL, Ill. (AP) _ Keith Goodnight rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns Thursday night in leading Illinois State to a 45-3 victory over St. Francis in a season opener for both teams.

Illinois State's Redbirds scored on each of their first three possessions and enjoyed a 17-0 lead at halftime.

The Fighting Saints of Joliet, an NCAA Div. II team, trailed 17-0 at halftime. Their only score, a 42-yard field goal by Jarrod Davsko, came with 2:55 remaining.

The Redbirds held the Saints to eight first downs and 122 yards total offense. Sacked six times, Saints quarterback Brian Vanderluitgaren was able to complete only seven of 19 passes for 38 yards.

Illinois State, which gained 466 yards in total offense, capped its first drive with a 7-yard TD pass from Lester Anderson to Steve Wilson.

Goodnight ran 80 yards for a score with 18 seconds left in the first quarter.
