Parkway Animal Hospital celebrates 40 years

August 27, 2018

When Roseburg veterinarian Scott Hendy applied for a permit in 1978 to build Parkway Animal Hospital on Edenbower Boulevard and Stewart Parkway, there was only Mercy Medical Hospital between him and Bi-Mart.

Wednesday, he and the staff at the animal hospital will celebrate 40 years of watching the west side of the highway I-5 and their office grow.

“We were the trial case for annexing to the city and getting business zoning,” Hendy said. “They had just put in Stewart Parkway as residential and (it was) obviously going to change to business.”

Businesses filled the area and the animal hospital grew with it, nearly doubling in size with an expansion in 2000 and remodeling the front office area for their big anniversary.

“We didn’t have enough room for all the files in the front of the office for some of the old-time clients,” Hendy said.

He also said they are constantly seeing new patients, so much so that the entire wall behind the desk is lined with thousands of client files from the past three to four years.

“The next step is to computerize everything, but we haven’t done that yet,” Hendy said.

Starting with only Hendy, the business has grown to needing three veterinarians working with both small animals in the office and large animals in the field.

“Within six months of opening, we needed to hire an associate,” Hendy said.

Hendy said there are some diseases that they weren’t able to treat even a decade ago, but advancements in technology have changed that.

“When I started, we had to hand develop X-rays,” Hendy said. “We can use ultrasound now in mares and other animals. It’s a lot more technical versus just healing wounds and pulling calves.”

The animal hospital is now a partnership between Hendy and veterinarian Allan Rott. Hendy is slowly preparing to retire, but said as long as he enjoys it and is able, he will stay in the clinic.

To celebrate, the office will have an open house Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. for clients and community members to see the renovation and how far the office has come. They will be serving light refreshments and have drawings and prizes.
