Hours-long standoff with police continues in Groton

January 9, 2019

An armed man remains in a standoff with police in Groton that began Tuesday night.

It began after 7 p.m. Tuesday when Groton police went to an Orion Avenue home for a reported disturbance.

“Upon arrival, officers met with a female who advised that her husband was within the residence, that he had discharged a handgun within the home,” Groton Police Chief Louis Fuscaro Jr. said.

Officers then removed the woman and two small children to a safe location.

A perimeter was set up around the house and evacuated area residents with the assistance of other law enforcement agencies.

Police have determined that the man is the only person inside the house.

More than 15 hours after the first response, the standoff continues.

More enforcement has been brought to the scene including the FBI, CSI, Connecticut State Police and the Emergency Services Unit-Tactical Team.

After arrival of the tactical units, numerous attempts have been made to contact the man via cell phone and other means.

Although there is no immediate threat to people in the area that are still in their homes, out of an abundance of caution, residents have been asked to remain in their home.
