Make the tough call on drug tests
The Kankakee County State’s Attorney’s Office now has free drug testing kits available for parents who suspect their children might be abusing these harmful substances.
They can surely prove useful and can even save lives. But they do present a dilemma for parents. Will they forge distrust among their children by demanding they take the test?
In some cases, perhaps many, the answer probably would be yes. But if you weigh the circumstances and find it absolutely essential to make the appeal, then go ahead and do so by all means.
This newspaper has published story after story in recent years detailing the scourge drugs have cast on our society.
While overdose deaths in Kankakee County have declined this year, there still have been about 20, and we can all agree one is one too many.
So, keep a keen eye out for the tell-tale signs of drug use among not only children, but the other family members and friends in your life. If they are present, urge them to get help through candid conversation.
But if denial is the response and concerns still exist, take the next step and demand the test to remove any doubt.
They might not be happy with you at the time, but if a positive test is the first step on the road to recovery, the resentment likely will turn to gratitude one day.
