LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) _ Freshman Elton Brand scored 23 points and highlighted two first-half runs Monday as No. 3 Duke overpowered Chaminade, 106-70, in the opening game of the Maui Invitational Tournament.

The Blue Devils (3-0) dominated every phase of the game, converting 34 of 70 field goals, pulling down 53 rebounds _ to 31 for the Silverswords _ and forcing 21 turnovers.

Five other Duke players finished in double figures. Trajan Langdon, Mike Chappell and Roshown McLeod each had 14 and Steve Wojciechowski and William Avery added 11 apiece. Wojciechowski also had 11 assists and Shane Battier had 14 rebounds.

After Chaminade tied the game at 5-5, Brand highlighted runs of 17-4 and 17-6 with six points each time.

At the half, it was 52-29 and late in the game, Duke had the margin up to 37 points.

The closest Chaminade got in the second half was 20 points, 77-57, when Stanley Martin scored 12 points during an 18-5 run.

Martin finished with 14 points for Chaminade with Darnell Clavon high at 21. However, the Silverswords lost inside strength, both in scoring and rebounding, when Aleksay Chitikov was injured midway through the first half and did not return to the game. In the season opener last week, Chitikov scored 31 points.

The Silverswords converted only 26 of 62 from the floor and shot 18 free throws to Duke’s 39.
