October 6, 2018

WEST ALLIS — Watertown’s boys cross country team placed seventh while the girls finished 13th at the Wisconsin Lutheran Invitational on Thursday at McCarty Park.

Senior Matthew Engel finished eighth in 16 minutes, 56 seconds to lead Watertown’s boys.

Junior Izak Jensen (44th, 17:38), sophomore Christopher Kitzhaber (58th, 18:02), senior Joshua Vana (73rd, 18:13) and sophomore Nathan Williams (76th, 18:17) rounded out the team score of 259. Freshman Oliver Meyers (101st, 18:45) and sophomore Joshua Krueger (120th, 19:20) turned in the team’s sixth and seventh finishes. Williams, Meyers and Krueger also posted personal best times.

“Matthew was in 17th or 18th place at (the mile mark) and kept aggressively tracking down runners ahead of him the rest of the way,” Watertown cross country coach Kirk Wackett said.

Watertown’s girls scored 341 points.

Senior Marissa Wackett (15th, 20:24), juniors Cara Smith (51st, 21:26) and Vanessa Olson (79th, 22:09), and sophomores Jadyn Zechzer (96th, 22:54) and Emma Gilbertsen (100th, 23:01) scored for the Goslings. Senior Michaelee Teska (101st, 23:06) was the team’s sixth finisher.

“Marissa’s time was a new personal best,” coach Wackett said. “She made up 12-13 places after the first mile to get into the medals. I feel really good about our progress. Many of our athletes are running as well as they ever have and have found their groove at the right time.”

Watertown runs at the Badger South Conference meet on Friday, Oct. 12, at Lake Farm County Park in Madison.

“It was fun to see the athletes run with the Milwaukee area teams,” Luther Prep cross country coach Naomi Fritz said. “Special highlight from tonight was Abby Buege placing in the top 20. As the team said in practice on Wednesday afternoon, our goal is to run our race, focus on what we can do, and use the other people to make us better. The Phoenix were strong today and many season best times were achieved. It was a wonderful day to run and they did well.”

Some of the Phoenix athletes will run on Tuesday at the St. John’s Military Invitational.
