ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) _ Umpire Marty Foster missed Wednesday night's game between the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers one day after he was hit in the mask with a four ball.

Foster had a bruised left cheek and strained neck after being hit Tuesday by a foul ball from Texas' Randy Velarde in the eighth inning. The ball hit squarely on Foster's mask, knocking it askew as the umpire dropped to one knee.

Travis Katzenmeier, a fill-in umpire, joined the crew for at least the rest of this series to work with crew chief Mark Hirschbeck, Pat Spieler and Wally Bell.

Hirschbeck worked home plate Wednesday with Spieler at first base, Bell at second and Katzenmeier at third.
