Colorado FB Player Suspended

March 7, 2000

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) _ University of Colorado senior defensive back Damion Barton, accused of assaulting his pregnant wife, was suspended indefinitely by the team.

Football coach Gary Barnett on Monday said the suspension includes routine practices during spring drills, which open this weekend.

He also will miss at least the first game of the season _ Sept. 2 against Colorado State.

He was arrested and briefly held last week on third-degree assault charges after allegedly hitting his wife, Kalani, who was 8 1/2 months pregnant.

``His return will be based on how he handles himself over this period of time. He has to conduct himself properly, take care of business and get his life back in order. We’re all concerned for his welfare, Kalani’s well-being and for that of the baby,″ Barnett said.
