WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) _ A defensive back for the Purdue football team has been arrested following a shooting incident.

Dionysius D. ``Wayne″ Francis, a 21-year-old junior, was suspended from the team late Monday pending a university investigation, school spokesman Jim Vruggink said Monday.

Francis is believed to have been the intended victim of the shooting. He was arrested early Saturday on suspicion of carrying a handgun without a permit. West Lafayette police said Francis’ gun was not fired.

Shots were fired as West Lafayette police responded to a fight in front of Arby’s restaurant at 2:39 a.m. West Lafayette Police Chief Dennis Mitchell on Monday night said police recovered a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun near the scene but are still searching for the shooter.
