Dortmund signs Serie A top scorer Ciro Immobile
DORTMUND, Germany (AP) — Borussia Dortmund has signed Italy striker Ciro Immobile, a move that should help fill the void of the departing Robert Lewandowski.
Immobile led Serie A in scoring this past season with 22 goals for Torino and is part of the Italy squad for the upcoming World Cup.
Dortmund announced the signing on its website Monday, saying the 24-year-old Immobile signed a five-year deal effective from July 1. It did not disclose financial details.
German media suggested Dortmund was paying around 18.5 million euros ($25 million) for Immobile. His previous contract was split between Torino and Juventus.
“We are getting a versatile and dynamic striker who has established himself in a top European league in an impressive manner,” Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said.
Bundesliga top scorer Lewandowski is joining league champion Bayern Munich next season.
Dortmund had already signed Colombian striker Adrian Ramos from Hertha Berlin and Immobile provides the side with another option up front.
“He’s a real powerhouse, one that has scored goals from all positions,” Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said. “He’s used to making a big effort. He’s a real fighter.”
In comments translated from Italian, Immobile said Dortmund was a “very big club; I’m happy to be here. It’s an international club known throughout Europe.”
