Handgun ‘in close proximity’ to suspect in officer-involved shooting, police say
A handgun was found “in close proximity” to the suspect in the May 22 officer-involved shooting, Fort Wayne police said today.
The police Gang Unit was patrolling in the 3900 block of Winter Street when officers saw a vehicle in the area and heard at least one shot fired, police said. They said officers attempted to stop a gold Chrysler in the immediate area of the gunshot, but the vehicle refused to stop and a pursuit ensued.
During the pursuit, police said the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed until it lost control and crashed into a home in the 3600 block of Oliver Street.
Police said a shell casing was found at the scene where the initial shot was fired, and investigators are awaiting ballistic testing to see whether they are from the same weapon. They said their investigation continues.
