STRATFORD - A convicted sex offender was charged Monday with downloading child pornography from the internet.
Karl Newbauer, 56, of Lambert Drive, was charged with third-degree possession of child pornography.
He was being held in lieu of $75,000 bond.
Local police recently received notice from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that Newbauer had been downloading child porn, police said.
NCME, with the aid of state and federal law enforcement, monitors the internet for child pornography.
Police said Newbauer was found to have downloaded three images from the Internet of boys being sexually assaulted by adult men.
When they later confronted Newbauer, police said he denied downloading the images and claimed that some unknown hacker had gotten into his account.
Newbauer was arrested in July 2000 and charged with possession of child pornography, enticing a minor on the computer and promoting a minor in an obscene performance, according to court records. He was subsequently sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years.
