George Washington 96, Drake 93 (OT)
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Myriah Lonergan sank a short jumper with 36.7 seconds remaining in overtime Sunday and George Washington rallied from 17 points down in the final five minutes of regulation to defeat Drake 96-93 in the second round of the NCAA Midwest Regional.
The Colonials (26-5) advanced to the round of 16 for the first time and will face second-ranked Colorado in the third round Thursday. The game will be played on the Drake campus in Des Moines, Iowa.
Darlene Saar scored 26 points and Tajama Abraham had 25 for the Colonials, while Debbie Hemery added 13 points and Martha Williams 12.
Julie Rittgers paced the Bulldogs (25-6) with 29 points, Lisa Brinkmeyer had 16, Tricia Wakely added 14 and Kristi Kinne 11.
Drake seemed in control, leading 78-61 with 5:04 left in the second half when George Washington began its comeback, going on a 20-4 run to pull to 82-81 on a basket by Lonergan with 34 seconds remaining.
Lonergan then picked up a loose ball on the inbounds play and scored with 27.2 seconds left to the give GW its first lead since the opening five minutes
Hemery then mad a foul shot with three seconds remaining to increase the lead to 84-82, but freshman Kiersten Miller sank two free throws with eight-tenths of a second remaining to force overtime.
The Colonials quickly jumped to an 88-84 lead. Rittgers gave the Bulldogs a brief 93-92 lead on a 3-point basket with 56 seconds left.
Lonergan’s follow gave George Washington the lead for good. She then hit a free throw with 12 seconds left, and Saar added two more with 2.2 seconds to play to seal the victory.
