Sonoco releasing excess water from dam on Black Creek

September 17, 2018

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – As a result of the heavy rains from Hurricane Florence in the Pee Dee, Sonoco will be releasing excess water from its dam on Black Creek in Hartsville for at least the next 24 hours.

This excess water could lead to flooding conditions downstream on the Black Creek in Darlington County.

Sonoco is coordinating with Duke Energy’s Lake Robinson Dam to manage the unprecedented amount of rainfall experienced over the past several days as a result of Hurricane Florence as it moves through Black Creek.

Sonoco also is coordinating with Darlington County and Hartsville officials to provide the public updated information. Sonoco’s Hartsville dam is located at its manufacturing complex in Hartsville, and the complex is being shut down as it expects to experience flooding over the next 24 hours.

In addition to closing its manufacturing operations, Sonoco is closing its corporate office complex through Monday. Additional advisories will be issued as necessary.
