Lady Patriots bludgeon Anthem Prep 14-1: Questel’s arm, Zimmerman’s bat led MALC to win
BULLHEAD CITY — Junior Payton Questel pitched a six-inning complete game and Summer Zimmerman recorded three hits to lead the visiting Lady Patriots over Anthem Prep 14-1.
Questel gave up one run, struck out five and walked two to earn the victory against the Lady Eagles during their season-opening Arizona Interscholastic Association 1A West Region softball game on Wednesday afternoon.
Junior shortstop Summer Zimmerman hit a home run, doubled, singled, had three RBI and scored one run in five at-bats to lead the Patriots.
“Offensively, our bats were slow, which caused us to leave a lot of runners in scoring position over the first five innings — seven runners were stranded,” said Patriots head coach Shanda Weiler by text message. “However, after a few adjustments in the batter’s box, the bats came alive to score five runs in the sixth inning.”
Questel hit three singles, had three RBI and scored three runs in five at-bats; and senior third baseman Maeline Mulligan singled, doubled and scored three runs in four at-bats.
Payton and Zimmerman, who recorded 10 outs between them, led the Patriots’ defense.
Zimmerman snagged a line drive off the bat of Eagles hitter Anna Henshaw. After grabbing the liner at third base, Zimmerman threw out Ollie Leclerc when junior first baseman Jordan Holmes tagged her out for the double play.
