Man shoots one of three armed robbers who pistol-whipped 68-year-old father in Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A man shot and wounded one of three armed robbers who pistol-whipped his 68-year-old father in the backyard of their Cleveland home, police said.

A 40-year-old woman was arrested after being shot several times in her abdomen, according to police. She has not been formally charged, nor have her two accomplices.

The incident happened about 10:30 p.m. Friday at a home in the 6600 block of Bliss Avenue in the city’s St. Clair-Superior neighborhood.

A witness told police the woman was walking home from the store and dropped several items from her bag, police reports say. A man picked up the items and the woman yelled for two men to help confront the man, according to police reports say.

One man walked up his driveway. Two men then confronted the 68-year-old man near his driveway and chased him into the backyard, according to police reports.

The two men and the woman all had guns and pistol-whipped the man several times in the face, according to police reports. He was unable to make a statement to police because of his injuries, police reports say.

The man’s 44-year-old son heard noises coming from the backyard, went outside and saw the trio pointing guns at his father, who was on the ground, according to police reports.

The son ran inside, grabbed his gun and yelled at the trio to leave his father alone, police reports say.

One of the robbers reached for a gun in his waistband and the 44-year-old man opened fire, police reports say. He fired at least six gunshots at the trio, hitting the woman several times. Another bullet hit a neighbor’s home, police reports say.

The 44-year-old man’s gun was reported stolen from Purcell, Oklahoma in 2013, according to police reports. Officers found another gun in the backyard, police reports say.

The woman who was shot and the man who was pistol-whipped were both taken to MetroHealth for treatment.
