Police Warn of Italy Train Killer
ROME (AP) _ Fearing Italy’s train killer might strike again, police promised to step up security and warned women not to travel alone by train on the Italian Riviera.
The killer has shot a woman to death during each of the last two holiday weekends on trains running along the Riviera. This Saturday is another holiday, Liberation Day.
Plainclothes agents will be aboard trains on routes along the Riviera and police will beef up forces in stations between Genoa, Turin and Florence, newspapers said.
``All passengers should be cautious,″ Genoa prosecutor Guido Zavanone told the AGI news agency. He recommended no unnecessary train travel.
Police suspect the train killer might also be the same person who killed six other women in the Riviera earlier this year. A special task force is investigating the case.
In both train slayings, the victims were women in their early 30s traveling alone on holiday weekends. Both were shot in the head and their bodies dumped in train bathrooms.
In each case, the assailant used a master key to relock the bathroom. After the killings, the attacker apparently put the victims’ handbags on their seats as his ``signature.″
