New London school employee appears in court on sex charges
New London — Calling Corriche Gaskin a “serious risk to the community,” Judge Hillary Strackbein on Wednesday kept in place a 100,000 bond. On Tuesday, police added charges of second-degree sexual assault, four counts of risk of injury to a minor, voyeurism with malice, disseminating voyeuristic material and third-degree possession of child pornography. Details related to the new allegations were sealed by a court order, the reason for which was not immediately clear.
Gaskin is a convicted felon who had worked at Bennie Dover since at least 2015 as a school climate specialist — a noncertified position working with students, staff and families on peer mediation and behavioral supports. He was earning an annual salary of 1,000.
Gaskin, who previously had worked with the Eastern Community Development Corp. as an assistant to children with disabilities, had argued in court that he was an unwitting participant in the transport of the drugs. He was sentenced to time served, six months of home confinement, three years of supervised release and ordered to perform 120 hours of community service.
The school district is providing additional counselors “for all schools affected,” and announced a series of community coffee hours at four locations over the next several days. The first will be held between 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria of Bennie Dover. Others will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Central Office, from 3 to 4 p.m. May 10 at the New London High School auditorium and from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Harbor Elementary School cafeteria.
