San Antonio woman on trial for murder allegedly shot boyfriend for being ‘jerk’
A San Antonio woman who allegedly confessed to police in 2017 that she shot her boyfriend for being a “jerk” and then slit his throat because she wasn’t sure he was dead, pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder and is now on trial in state district court.
A jury was chosen earlier this week. Testimony is expected to begin Wednesday morning in the trial of Laura Flores Messick, 32. She is accused of shooting and stabbing Chason Montez DeOca, 40, on June 10, 2017.
According to an arrest affidavit, Messick told police she was standing in the restroom when she and DeOca, who was her boyfriend, began to argue. She allegedly shot the man as he stood in the hallway of his home in the 7600 block of Muleshoe Lane on the Southwest Side.
Authorities found DeOca, an Iraq War veteran who served in the U.S. Army, lying in a pool of his own blood. A 9mm shell casing was found in the bathroom, the affidavit stated. He had been shot once in the chest and his throat was cut open.
Messick emerged as a suspect in the shooting after authorities interviewed close family members and other witnesses.
The affidavit stated that Messick told police she was thinking, “What an (expletive). What a jerk,” when she allegedly shot DeOca, and that she cut his neck with a knife because she wasn’t sure he was dead after she shot him.
The case is being heard before Judge Catherine Torres-Stahl in the 175th state District Court.
If convicted of murder, Messick faces up to life in prison.
