All-Male Club Again Rejects Women Members
ERIE, Pa. (AP) _ A 120-year-old men’s social club has rejected three more women who applied for membership, but all five male candidates were accepted.
The Erie Maennerchor Club previously voted twice against membership for a judge because she is a woman.
A few years ago, the club’s restriction on full membership for women was eliminated but no women have been accepted. Only five negative votes were needed for rejection. The club has 2,800 members.
The club on Tuesday rejected membership applications from Linda Susko, wife of the city solicitor; Gwen Ralph, an attorney for an energy company; and Donna Luhman, the manager of a state employment security office.
″I plan on spending the rest of my life in Erie, and hopefully I’ll eventually be able to get in,″ Ms. Ralph said.
She said lunch-time dining spots in downtown Erie are limited.
″Being a member of the Maennerchor would allow me to conduct business with clients over lunch,″ Ms. Ralph said.
