Giants Place Javier on DL, Recall Kim Batiste
DENVER (AP) _ Already hampered by injuries, the San Francisco Giants lost another starter Tuesday night when outfielder Stan Javier was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring.
Javier sustained the injury trying to beat out a bunt in the fourth inning of San Francisco’s 5-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies. Kim Batiste was recalled from Triple-A Phoenix to take Javier’s spot on the 25-man roster.
``The whole year has been like this,″ said third baseman Matt Williams, who injured his right shoulder breaking up a double play Tuesday. ``It’s tough to play each game without everyone able to play.″
Williams moved to first base in the eighth inning because of concern that he might not be able to make the throw from third, but he said team doctors told him the injury is not serious.
Williams, who has hit in seven straight games, missed last week’s all-star game because of a bruised left elbow.
Outfielder Glenallen Hill is expected to miss at least 12 weeks with a fractured left wrist, and the Giants are without an everyday first baseman after trading Mark Carreon last week. Batiste could fill in at first or third when he reports to the team.
Batiste started the year with San Francisco but has been demoted twice after hitting .139 in 20 games. He had a .295 average with 13 homers and 40 RBIs in 37 games with Phoenix.
Javier was hitting .270 with two homers and 22 RBIs.
