Five good minutes with Barret Pickering: On his celebration with Jerald Foster, and golf
Hometown: Birmingham, Alabama.
Depth chart: No. 1 at place-kicker.
Career games played: 11
Of note: Pickering was 3-for-3 on field goals in Nebraska’s 9-6 victory against Michigan State last week, with makes from 36 yards, 20 and the game-winner from 47 with 5 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The makes from 36 and 47 yards were his two longest field goals of the season. He’s now 12-of-16 on field goals and 38-of-39 on extra points.
On the highlight play of his career: “It’s got to be Saturday, that last kick was pretty exciting, and everybody was pretty excited when that thing went in.”
On the toughest part about kicking in the snow: “Just playing the winds. It was pretty windy out there on Saturday. Just focusing on where it’s going to take the ball, and trusting in the ball I’m going to hit and how it’s going to move.”
On the celebration with lineman Jerald Foster after the go-ahead field goal: “It was a good time. He wanted to pick me up, so we did that. And then I realized we didn’t have a TV timeout so we had to go kick off. I was like, ‘Jerald, Jerald, you got to put me down. I got to go kick off.’ It was great. All the (linemen) are always so happy after a field goal. They’re just getting beat in, and for them to be happy after it and celebrating with me is a good time. They sacrifice their body for me.”
Jerald Foster on the moment in this photo: “I was going to carry him all the way to the sideline, and he’s like, ‘Jerald, Jerald,’ and I hear him on my shoulder and he’s like, ‘I got to kick the kickoff,’ and I dropped him and said, ‘Go do your thing.’ pic.twitter.com/WMs265nOjH — Brent Wagner (@LJSSportsWagner) November 17, 2018
On the similarities of kicking and golf, another sport he plays: “It’s essentially the same thing. (Holder Isaac Armstrong) is basically my caddy out there, and we go out there and talk about it because he has to deal with wind for punting. We both have a good idea of how it’s playing. If I’m feeling something, I just want to make sure he feels the same way about it.”
On having quarterback Adrian Martinez as one of his roommates, along with offensive linemen Will Farniok and running back Brody Belt: “So Will and I committed a long time ago and we had agreed to live together, and we needed two more roommates. So shortly after Adrian committed, we knew he was going to come early so we texted him and we’re like, ‘Hey, do you want to live with us?’ We didn’t really know each other well until we got here. They’re some of my closest, best friends, so it’s a good time.”
Three things most people don’t know about me:
1. I really like sushi.
2. My favorite TV series is the crime drama “Power.”
3. I can score in the 70s in golf.
