Hawaii 91, San Diego St. 62
HONOLULU (AP) _ Tony Maroney keyed a 17-2 run in the first half and Tes Whitlock a 22-10 spurt in the second Saturday night to power Hawaii to a 91-62 Western Athletic Conference victory over San Diego State.
Maroney, who finished with 24 points, scored 12 points during the first half spurt to enabled the Rainbows (10-7, 4-5) to take a comfortable 40-24 halftime lead over the Aztecs (7-10, 2-7).
Whitlock, who had only three points over the first 20 minutes, put on a dazzling 3-point shooting display over a five-minute stretch in the second half by connecting on five straight. He finished with 18 points as the Rainbows scored their second highest scoring total of the season.
In addition to his scoring, Maroney also had 12 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for Hawaii were John Molle and Brian Parker with 12 each, while Kalia McGee contributed 12 assists.
For the game, Hawaii connected on 37 of 68 field goals attempts, while San Diego State was 26 of 55.
For the Aztecs, Marc Carter was high with 17 points.
