HESPERIA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a man chasing down his own stolen truck was struck and killed by a San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy.

It happened around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday in Hesperia.

The Sheriff's Department says 18-year-old Patrick Chambers and a friend began chasing a man who had stolen Chambers' car from the bar where he worked.

Authorities say they drove after the truck, which crashed. The thief then ran off. Chambers' friend stopped his car, a Camaro, and gave chase while Chambers got out and waited by the Camaro.

Authorities say the stolen car had a malfunction and had sprayed oil for about 1,000 feet. An arriving sheriff's patrol car skidded on the slick and hit Chambers, killing him.

Authorities say the suspected car thief, a local homeless man, has been arrested.
