Three Quakes Rattle Remote Central Utah Region

March 25, 1986

SCIPIO, Utah (AP) _ Three small-to-moderate earthquakes shook the countryside near this remote central Utah community Monday afternoon, but no damage or injuries were reported, officials said.

An earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale was followed seven minutes later by a earthquake measuring 4.3 on the scale, said senior staff seismologist Ethan Brown. A third quake measuring 3.7 on the scale struck about four hours later, said Brown.

The temblors were centered about 6 miles southeast of here, he said.

The quakes caused no damage or injuries, said Millard County Sheriff’s dispatcher Fred Cahoon.

A quake of magnitude 2 is the smallest normally felt by humans, while quakes of 3.5 to 4.0 can cause slight-to-moderate damage in populated areas.

The April, 1906 San Francisco quake, which along with a subsequent fire was blamed for 700 deaths, measured 8.3.
