SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Jeff Kent hit two homers, including a grand slam, and drove in a career-high seven runs, leading the San Francisco Giants to a 12-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night.

The Reds lost their eighth in a row following a 10-game winning streak.

Kent, breaking out in a big way after hitting just .098 since his July 10 return from a 24-game stay on the disabled list because of a knee sprain, hit his sixth career grand slam as part of the Giants’ eight-run fourth.

Charlie Hayes drove in three runs in the same inning with a two-run homer and an RBI single as the Giants won for just the third time in 14 games since the All-Star break.

Joe Carter, acquired a day earlier in a trade with Baltimore, doubled and scored during the Giants’ big fourth. He went 1-for-5.

Jose Mesa, obtained from Cleveland in another trade Thursday, pitched a scoreless ninth for San Francisco.

Mark Gardner (8-4) scattered five hits in eight innings, allowing two runs and helping the Giants snap a three-game home losing streak. He walked one and struck out four in his first win since June 28.

The eight-run burst was the second-biggest inning of the year for the Giants and the second-most runs given up in an inning this season by the Reds.

Barry Bonds, celebrating his 34th birthday, was intentionally walked to load the bases in the fourth before Kent connected on a 3-1 offering from Scott Winchester (3-6). The slam was Kent’s 11th homer of the season.

Kent hit a two-run homer in the first and added a sacrifice fly in the third. The seven RBIs by Kent were the most by a Giants player since Bonds also had seven Oct. 1, 1993, against Los Angeles.

Kent’s previous career-high RBI high was five, which he achieved four times, the most recent on June 1 against the Reds.

The Reds scored their runs on a sacrifice fly by Mike Frank and an RBI single by Guillermo Garcia.

Notes: The Reds allowed nine runs in the fifth inning against the Chicago Cubs on May 15, while the Giants scored nine runs in the fifth in an interleague contest June 22 against Oakland. ... Kent has seven multi-homer games in his career. ... The Reds are 1-6 against the Giants this season, including an 0-4 mark at San Francisco.
